Prevention
Rules regarding driver licensing of patients with OSAS should be implemented across Europe to prevent road accidents due to daytime sleepiness.
Diagnosis and treatment
- The number of centres able to diagnose and manage patients with OSAS needs to be increased.
- The understanding of daytime somnolence and the methods necessary for its detection and assessment need to be improved.
- nCPAP is a very effective but cumbersome treatment. A pharmacological alternative to nCPAP would help alleviate treatment.
Research
Basic knowledge of the disease needs to be improved to enable development of simple, cost-effective and reliable screening tests to identify patients who would benefit from treatment.
